I skipped the parents and teachers talk session for Isabelle’s class last week since hubby was not around, and sitting in there would be like an idiot for someone who can’t understand much Thai. With hubby’s back to Bangkok again, both of us didn’t want to miss Justin’s session, which was held yesterday.
It’s nice to see some photos taken over the school year, and see how our boy was learning at school. The teacher said he’s ACTIVE and PLAYFUL, which I can’t agree more.
Judging from the photos, I can easily tell that they learn from play, and play to learn. I like the part where the kids went to the garden with a magnifying glass trying to look for something. I’m not sure what’s the theme was around, but seeing a bunch of kids squatting on the grass, flipping through the leaves and looking into the glasses looked pretty fun to me. No wonder my boy likes his magnifying glass at home.
I saw what they had at lunch, and I know that he takes papaya and banana at school. He hardly eats local fruits and this boy is very spoiled by the variety of imported fruits. He will tell me that he will gag if he takes papaya, but he seems alright eating a piece at lunch. LOL!
There are some photos taken on the field trips too. They had 4 trips this year. Too bad Justin missed the music band performance which fell on the same day we went to Koh Chang island. He missed taking photo with the Thai Princess!!!
The teachers showed us the books which will be used in K3, and the Thai….oh my, I would faint faster if he’s going to sit for that! Right now, I’m already lost with Thai in K2. Whenever hubby is not around, I will tell the teacher that Justin can’t do his homework, and please coach him at school. So far so good and the teachers are very understanding.
Frankly, I don’t understand much about the talk, but I could guess from the photos and books. After the talk, a parent approached me and asked if Justin’s staying for K3. Some of his classmates are going for the test of Primary 1, if they pass, they can skip K3. This parent is asking if we are sending Justin straight to international school, and it’s something we have been thinking about. Her daughter is mixed Thai and Japanese, so she will send her girl to Japan in some months of the year, and back to this school again. Gee…Justin’s gonna miss this girl because they are really besties at class.
So, it’s decision making time. I like the school activities at the current school. I feel like they are giving the kids a lot of exposure, and it’s something we might not get back home. I like the way they learn, more hands on, more REAL things, and more fun. Even a simple math theory of “equal”, “more than” and “less than” was well presented with objects and scale where the kids had fun trying to balance the scale themselves.
But in terms of English, this school has “slower” syllabus, even if it’s taught by a foreigner. Justin will definitely brush up his Thai more, if he stays for another year. Then, he will go for English and probably Chinese.
So, we have to weigh out some pros and cons. We will have to make a decision in a few weeks…
