Oh boy, I spent whole morning waiting at a famous gynae’s clinic for my first check up here. I used to go to my regular gynae, but since he said stopped breastfeeding immediately, which is impossible for Justin and I, I thought I might just go for second opinion. Actually, I just need some reassurance, I already had lots of support from moomies at mymomsbest and read up some materials.
There must be more than 30 patients awaiting for their turns. Worst still, none of us can go to the toilet before ultrasonic scan, as a full bladder will give a more accurate scan. So, you can see some ladies sitting uneasily on the chairs while biting their lips! It’s really funny. I talked to some of them, all of us can’t wait to use the toilet!
While waiting here, I saw a new mother breastfeeding her newborn. It’s really touching whenever I see someone doing it in public. But at the same time, other mothers also using formula and bottles, so it’s really sad to see it since it’s a baby-friendly-initiated hospital.
The maternity ward’s sister came in to talk to some expectant mums. She’s encouraging them to breastfeed. I approached her, and she still recognized me. Talked to her about my concern in weaning off too soon, and she said it’s ok to breastfeeding during pregnancy. But still, doctor’s advice is most accurate, better talk to the gynae first. I caught a few mothers’ attention during this conversation, they must think that I’m crazy to breastfeed my baby until now and even thought to do so when I’m expecting.
Finally, when I talked to the doc, he said it’s risky. He said breastfeeding is the best to baby, but tried to wean off slowly since I’m expecting. He already advised me, but it’s up to me what to do. Well, at least he didn’t force me to stop soon.
The other reason why I see him is that the previous doc can’t find my fetus / sac yet. So I told him my concern of having ectopic pregnancy. Luckily he found a very small sac, and can’t confirm yet. Got to re-scan again next week. At least I felt better knowing that the baby is implanted in my uterus. That got me worried for a while.
When it’s time to pay, OMG, it’s almost triple the fees I’m paying to my regular gynae. But still this famous gynae has so many patients, which means fame equals to money too. Judging from the cost, I think I’ll stick to the old doc.

  1. All the best to you :).

  2. Thanks Maria.

  3. Haha. You can afford it la.Take good care of yourself, hear?

  4. Shopping mum, Congratulations on your pregnancy. I think whether you do tandem nursing or not, its a very individual, private matter and depends on each and every pregnancy as each pregnancy is different. Previously I was advised to wean too by my gynae becos of my age as well as me having had a threatened miscarriage during the first trimester. So she considered it too risky to try. Anyway, just do what you feel most comfortable doing and don’t be pressured either way ie to wean or tandem nurse from what others are advising you to do. Take care of yourself well during this time. :)

  5. Willwolf, $$$ is rather short to me leh, but when we have to spend, we have to spend right?
MG, Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m not being pressure to wean or tandem nurse now. I take the clue from Justin, and if he’s willing to take other alternative rather than breastmilk, I’ll be delighted. But until now, he still needs Mcb a lot. So I’ll have to continue nursing him for a while.

  6. my doc also discouraged me, if I were to try for no 2. so now I reduce to night and morning feeding. well, due to this, supply is very little now, and ian only suckle for comfort. when I expressed in US last month, I only got 1oz or max 2oz per day (in opposed to 4-5oz easily per session - 3 sessions last time). :(

  7. congrats, Amy. so wonderful to hear of yr new pregnancy and that u r still BF Justin. I’m considering to try for #2 as well but i dread the thot of weaning or tandem nursing. as such i can totally understand yr feelings & dilemma. Take care…whatever yr decision, for having BF Justin for so long, he will know mummy loves him very very mucH!
