Got a phone call from my brother when I was back in Penang. From his voice, I knew something big had happenned. He asked for my mum and told her that they’re expecting a baby, confirmed through a test kit. They are still yet to see a gynae for a proper check up, and I told them they should. Or at least get some folic acid and multivitamin as supplements now.

Too bad they’re staying with my SIL’s nanny who’s very conservative. She told them it’s not necessary to check until a few months later. Huh? Why wait so long? I thought the first 12 weeks is very critical for fetus development, so better start eating healthily, get appropriate supplements, and confirm it’s not ectopic pregnancy. They didn’t plan for it, and according to my brother, the baby was conceived in Athens when they went for honeymoon last month. I still advised them to go for a check up as normally we’re more tired if having vacation with a tour, the body condition is not optimum.

Well, I offered them my books and info I’ve collected since hubby and I planned for having Justin. I hope SIL really reads and prepares herself for this pregnancy. Until now, there’re still lots of mothers who just get pregnant and give birth without getting themselves equiped. They just practise what’s been told by their old folks. I know some pantang are true and should be followed, but some are really non-scientific and may harm both mother and baby.

Like any breastfeeding supporters, I suggested that she reads up about breastfeeding too. But I know it’s not going to be easy for her to do it. Her old nanny who’d brought her up will not agree to it. My mum also advised her to breastfeed, but well, the decision is on her. Mum also felt that it’s better not to interfere too much as it might create unnecessary conflict later.

So, hopefully she’ll have a smooth pregnancy and a healthy baby!

P/S: Thanks for the info on stem cell collection. I was away and unable to read the comments for the past days. Thanks for all the replies!

  1. My SIL also pregnant now, no go for check up too but eat healthily, until got bleeding(7 weeks) only go for gynae(in fact i had hint her to go when she knew the pregnancy, but she didn’t) Lucky now is ok.
I also strongly encourage they go for proper check up during early pregnancy to avoid ectopic pregnancy!

  2. huh.. abit risky oh… they should go for check up leh… it is a happier news mah.. hope her’s baby is healthy…

  3. Woh.. another baby joining your family!! Great!

Yes.. share your Breast Feeding experiance with her.. but it all depends if she wants that..

Your bro and SIL live with her Nanny? err.. she’s a bit old to have a Nanny right?

  4. Jesslyn, that’w why I worried. Not every pregnancy is smooth, better get gynae’s advice but not old folks’ tales.

Joey, thanks, will be kepoh and ask them to go for check up again.

Zara’s mama, yes, we’re very excited about the news too. Oh, SIL’s mother promised to take care of the nanny until her passes away. She didn’t get married, and SIL calls her kai ma. She’s part of the family.

  5. i think it is absurd to see the gynae only after few months. my wife & i was so excited that we went straight to the gynae the day after tested positive using the test kit.
