My Mum’s Cooking
When we moved into the our house many years ago, kitchen range hoods were newly launch in the market, and my mum decided to try it on after being persuaded by the salesperson. Since the house was small, and we don’t have a wet kitchen, all of us thought that it’s a good idea to have one as my mum won’t have to wash the kitchen tiles and floor after every cooking.
But after she started using it, she turned it off totally. Why? She said it’s not practical as the hook was not effective enough when she’s frying fish, or cooking some oily dishes. Well, that was the time before she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and we ate like normal. So, I joked to her that her cooking was as good as the chef in restaurant, so she needed those heavy duty hooks they used in restaurants only, not the homely type. LOL!
After she was ill, she stopped cooking that way. I used to cook for the family when I was back for holiday during my uni years. We didn’t have normal Chinese dishes anymore, and everything was steamed or boil to suit my mum’s diet. I remembered my brother used to complained that it’s torturing for him not to take fried chicken at home.
But now, whenever we go back, she will try to cook for us, the usual Chinese style. Even if she knows I prefer to eat out, but she still insists on cooking for us, and won’t complain if we didn’t take it sometimes. I guess it’s her way of showing her love to us, and most mothers will express it with their home cook meals. Frankly, I miss her kapitan chicken now, and I’m wondering if I should ring her back and ask her to prepare the ingredients first. ![]()
