Before I moved to Bangkok, I can’t really accept the “third” kind, aka Ah Gua. You know? Those that have gone through gender transformation? I’m not bias, it’s just that I didn’t feel comfortable talking or seeing one. But then, my perception totally changed now. Thailand is more open as comparing to Malaysia. I’m not talking about the s*x industry or anything else, but the way how people see “things”. My neighbor has 3 sons and a daughter. His eldest dresses like a woman some times, but he’s still a “man” but he’s on pills. He’s quite fair and skinny, maybe you can ask him how to lose weight fast.
He’s still staying with his father, and the mother is probably staying with his sister, who has a baby. They still treat him like their child, regardless of him being a man or a woman. There are not a lot of parents whom I know, who can treat their children the same, if they find out that their kids are les, or g*y or ah gua. But in Thailand, they don’t really care much. Something about him is, he’s very good with babies. When his sister was in confinement at their place, he’s the one who took care of the newborn. I was soooo impressed!
Seriously, not a lot of “men” can do a good job during confinement, and he took care of his niece, washed the nappies, and basically took care of his sister too. I think he was not working at that time, and he used to work in a bank.
Over here, ah gua can just get any job like anyone, mostly. Some cosmetic counters like to hire ah gua as they are very pretty. I really mean it, they are PRETTY. The MAC counter where I got my makeup from has a tall and pretty ah gua working there. “She” is very good at makeup. As long as she doesn’t talk, you won’t be able to tell much.
But some ah gua went through the “voice box” surgery (don’t know what’s the right term)to change their voices, so they don’t sound like a man. Frankly, plastic surgery is widely available here. I’ve been to Yan Nee before, and oh boy, it’s an eye opening experience to see how much you can do to your body, if you can endure the pain and able to afford the cost. I was there with someone who did a nose job. Gee…if I can afford it, maybe I should go for plastic surgery too. LOL! But I kiasi la…
