Flood in Pathum Thani

I have never mentioned which part of province I’m staying in for the past 3 years, just for privacy. But then again, it’s time to write something about a place which has been my home since we moved to Thailand. Pathum Thani is a suburban, north of Bangkok city, and it takes about 30 – 45 minutes to reach the city center, depending on routes or traffic.

It’s a nice place, but some part may look like kampungs (villages), and it has a lot of canals, with Chrao Phraya river passes at some parts of this province.  There are a lot of nice moobans (gated communities / housing estates) in my area, and it’s a nice place to stay. Honestly.

But since the main effort is to prevent flooding in Bangkok city, Pathum Thani has badly suffered from the flooding in Thailand, mostly due to the water flow from Ayutthaya and its surrounding provinces. Heavy rains contributed to the mass water volume too, but I think it’s the incompetence of government management that makes things worse as well. Why didn’t they empty the dams before the monsoon? How can’t they predict the rain fall volume?

It’s not a good idea sacrificing Ayutthaya every year, which I know it’s always flooded during this time of the year, throughout my stay in Thailand. I totally love the historical sites, but I had only been there twice. There are a lot of industrial areas around this region, and as you know, most have already inundated. It’s a pain in the a** to loss such money you know? Talking from those giant investors’ point of views. Why can’t the Thai government plan a water management system effectively, instead of blaming the previous government? You bet.

I would be happier to see Yingluck putting more effort in preventing flood than giving out tablet computers to student. Honestly.

I’m kiasi, I admit that. Being a Malaysian living in a country without much natural disaster, you can’t blame me for being kiasi. Another thing is, I worried too much and too early as well. The moment I saw the tweet about evacuation, even if it’s a false alarm, I decided it’s time to leave the house in Pathum Thani. That was last Thursday.

On Thursday, Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi ordered an evacuation from Bangkok’s northern outskirts to Don Mueang airport due to the failure to repair the water gate in Khlong Ban Phrao canal in Sam Khok district of Pathum Thani.

Other authorities later dismissed Mr Plodprasop’s announcement and insisted that despite the unfinished repairs of the water gate, floodwaters would not reach Bangkok and its adjacent areas in Pathum Thani. Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra on Thursday also blasted the announcement, asking Bangkok residents to listen to him and him alone for any evacuation orders.

Pol Gen Pracha yesterday joined the debate over who should issue evacuation announcements. “I think [Mr Plodprasop] should have acknowledged by himself that I’m the one who will make the evacuation announcement. He can talk about the things he is responsible for.”

Mr Plodprasop himself apologised to the public for causing a panic but said he did not make an evacuation announcement. He only told people to move belongings to higher ground and their cars out of flood-risk areas.

The Interior Ministry’s emergency operation centre for floods, storms and landslides yesterday morning declared 17 districts of Bangkok disaster areas that needed immediate help.

But in the afternoon, Pol Gen Pracha dismissed the morning announcement.

From Bangkok Post

From the bottom of my heart, I’m glad that someone made the public panic. :P I won’t have evacuated early if not because of this mistake. Before the weekend, Sam Khok was very badly submerged and then the water had spread to our area. Check out Chuan Chuen Golf Course and its mooban, which is just a stone throw away from our house.

Cars in the evacuated Chuan Chuen Golf Avenue housing estate on the Bangkok-Pathum Thani road in Muang district of Pathum Thani are almost completely submerged in the province’s worst flooding in five decades. The Bangkok governor has warned the city has 48 to avoid a similar fate. PONGPAT WONGYALA

That’s how fast the water came. I just don’t understand why they can’t issue evacuation order at least 48 hours earlier for most parts of Pathum Thani, instead of doing so when it’s too late. So you people in Bangkok better get yourself prepared.

So far, here’s the flooding update in Thailand.

The PM failed to protect Navanakorn yesterday, as she promised. I don’t think I will wait for the updates and it’s best to flee to safety first.

Companies with operations at Nava Nakorn, which was established in 1971, include Japanese watchmakers Casio and Seiko, the Swiss powdered milk and food producer Nestle, Japanese electronics firm Toshiba and hard drive maker Western Digital, which has already lost another production facility at another industrial park.

Western Digital issued a statement saying its other facilities in Malaysia, Singapore and the U.S. are fully operational, but that it “now expects that the flooding of its Thailand facilities, combined with flood damage to the company’s supply chain in Thailand, will have significant impact on the company’s overall operations and its ability to meet customer demand for its products in the December quarter.”

The biggest blows were suffered by Honda and Toyota for whom Thailand is a major production base. Both have been forced to stop all work here due to flooding of their facilities.

Many of the factories in flooded industrial estates are producers of specialized components, such as parts for computer hard drives, producing a knock-on effect for manufacturers in other areas unaffected by flooding that are unable to source needed parts.

Last week, a Japanese trade organization criticized the Thai government for allegedly failing to provide timely and accurate information about the situation in the central province of Ayutthaya, where hundreds of factories have been devastated, including electronics makers and automotive parts suppliers.

“Japanese companies didn’t know what was happening or which information was true or not,” said Seiya Sukegawa of the Japan External Trade Organization Thailand. “They received warnings but not enough information and not enough time to decide the next step.”

So, are we all really safe?

Visa Renewal Again

This month is a busy month for all of us. Firstly, we have to go to the immigration office on Monday, with the kids, to extend our expired visas for another 7 days. Then, hubby will apply his visa here in Bangkok and the kids will join under his employment. As for me, I will fly back next Sunday, and fix my visa the following morning.

I hope that my dad won’t mind driving me back to Ipoh after my visa submission as MIL is expecting me, and I need to pack some stuffs. It will only take a couple of hours, I suppose. There won’t be any meeting up with friends as time is really tight. Furthermore, my mom doesn’t seem to be happy with driving me around. :P

That’s the thing I hate about flying home as without a car, I feel so cacat. Very inconvenient to go out and meet with others or do my stuffs. So, now you know why I hardly go for gathering!!!!

Anyway, if everything works out fine, I should get my visa on Tuesday afternoon. If time permits, and if my dad can loan me the car, I hope that I can do some shopping! Really need to get a battery operated lash curler from Sasa!!!! And maybe some shoes? Oh well, that depends on my mom again. LOL!

I’ll fly back to Bangkok on Wednesday, and hopefully, hubby can handle the kids for 3 days on his own. This is the first time I’m away from the kids, and hubby’s taking over ALL THE RESPONSIBILITIES.

I’m not so worried about how he’s gonna feed the kids or if they have after school bentos or what, but my main concern is can he pick them up on time as the teachers leave work at 4.30pm, the latest!!! So, he better work on his schedule and don’t stuck in any traffic jam in the city.

As for this week, the kids will have some performance on Wednesday, in conjunction of Mother’s Day in Thailand, which falls on 12th (Thursday). Then, they will have a long weekend, and I might be working from home again.

Isabelle will perform a dance with some kids, and Justin is going to do his speech. He’s almost ready, but he speaks super fast and so unclear!!! It’s like a speeding bullet train trying to reach the destination ASAP. LOL! Oh well, like I’ve said before, as long as he’s got up there, it’s a big achievement already. :)

Isabelle’s got used to dancing on stage, so I’m not worried about her. She will be just fine. :)

The Black Wednesday

How many black Wednesdays are there in Thailand? Oh well, I lost track. Frankly, I do agree that the major crackdowns are necessary to restore the order and teach all these protesters a good lesson that they should respect ELECTION and cannot bring down the government whenever they like. They have no idea how much lost their own country is facing, and how much inconvenience they have caused. Oh ya, I forgot, they are mostly poor and uneducated.

That would probably explain how important education is, and why most Thai would rather pay for private schools. Not to say that their government schools are not good but the good ones are pretty hard to get. So, better just send for private education. But these poor people…how to say ah?

This photo taken by a journalist, in the RED SPOT, of a parent with a kid. If you think the little toddler is the only one, think again. There are hundreds of kids there, and they are all allowed to leave in PEACE, but some still stay there. Weird parents…Just because you have FREE FOOD, a mat to sleep, doesn’t mean your kid should go along.

Ok, my post was interrupted. I wrote this during lunch hour, talking to the phone with hubby who’s away for days. Then the school called and asked to pick our kids NOW. Apparently, schools are closed from 1pm today and will only start again next week. The Red leaders surrendered, some fled away. Cowards.

But the real violence might have just begun as some protesters are very angry with the situation, and might not go home as arranged by the authority. Frankly, they should all be put in jail, but Thailand has always been very “human”, they will be sent home by buses. Can you believe that?

I shall share some photos, taken by one of the brave journalists who cover the story in Bangkok. My condolence to the Italian report who’s shot dead today, and many others who’s wounded throughout this incident.

Maybe it’s over now, and peace and order will be resumed.

Ok, my post sounds weird as the head and tail don’t connected. But if you are a mother staying here, and picked up calls from school to get your kids IMMEDIATELY for safety reason, you might be talking nonsense like me too.

The Reds

Am I lucky or what? I’m caught in the sea of Red protesters, TWICE!

First, it was last Saturday when I went to pick up hubby from his work place. His office is located along Viphavadi Rangsit Road, so it’s one of the busiest road in Bangkok, and the Reds “stormed” up that area last weekend. I didn’t realized that I drove into the parade of motorcycles and trucks full of Red protesters. But then, they were just “parading” around, doing nothing but congesting the traffic.

I wanted to snap the photos but I was driving, so photos were only taken in the car, with my phone after picking up hubby.

As you can see, we were so close to them but it’s really alright. Stay safe, I know. All of us do. Check out the pedestrians cheering for them from the pedestrian bridge. *slap head*

Not only the main roads, but the Red protesters gathered along the sides of the roads too. There were food and water supplies given free to them. The locals told me that they were given petrol allowance too. :p

There you go, more Reds blocking the road…

One of the poor cars which couldn’t get into the left turning.

More cars got stuck, including us. :P

Something I hate to see…kids are getting involved in the stupid act, without helmets! Frankly, I don’t know what the parents are thinking. Maybe the daily allowance includes term life insurance quotes, and pocket money for kids?

See the little girl on the left? I wonder if she knows what she’s doing…except maybe having some fun “roaming” around in the city.

And today, the Reds are all over the other provinces, last I read from the news. They are now having a fun parade in front of my office. I got to do some banking today, so again, I got stuck in the Reds. Sigh…

Anyway, it’s a non-violence protest. But if they keep making nonsense and creating so many inconveniences (like some shopping malls in the city closed down just because of the stupid protests!), can someone lock them up do something about this?
